The Tesla Roadster, a long-anticipated successor to the iconic sports car, has once again been put on hold. While enthusiastic fans and reservation holders patiently wait, Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, recently hinted that the sale of the Roadster will face yet another delay. The reason? Tesla’s priority is on models with a more immediate impact on sustainability and the company’s profitability.
The original plan was to release the new Roadster generation in 2020. But as the end of 2024 approaches, this model is still missing from the market, sparking questions about its future. Although the Roadster was first revealed as a concept in 2017 and was set to be Tesla’s flagship model, Tesla has instead turned its focus to other projects, like the Semi truck and the Cybertruck pickup.
Recently, Musk described the new Roadster as more of a “cherry on top,” and emphasized that it’s essential to first complete models that better contribute to sustainability and a profitable future. “Our main goal is to support sustainable development and to be ready for the challenges the world is facing,” Musk explained.
To recap, the Tesla Roadster is expected to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.1 seconds (faster than the Ferrari F80’s 2.15 seconds and the McLaren W1’s 2.7 seconds), with a range of up to 1,000 km on a single charge and a top speed approaching 400 km/h.
Although Tesla fans are eager for the performance and tech innovation that the Roadster promises, the reality is that this project remains on the sidelines. Many reservation holders, who have been waiting for seven years, worry that their anticipation may be met with fewer features than initially promised.
Musk also hinted that production plans for 2025 might change again. “We would love to work on the Roadster, but we need to keep the bigger picture in mind and focus on what matters most right now,” he added.
As the wait for the new Roadster continues, Tesla keeps pushing the boundaries of the auto industry with ongoing innovations. Even so, it’s expected that the Roadster’s sales will remain on hold for a while longer until the company can fully prioritize this project. Reservation holders should be prepared for further delays in seeing their dream sports car—a model with the potential to redefine electric cars.
One thing is certain: when the Roadster finally hits the market, it’s expected to be something extraordinary. Until then, fans can only hope the wait will be worth it.
