Volkswagen plans a major transformation of its ID. electric cars: a return to tradition and significant design changes
Volkswagen is preparing for a substantial overhaul of its ID. electric vehicles, set to launch in 2026. Models such as the ID.3 and ID.4, pioneers of the brand’s electric lineup, will undergo changes in design, interior, and technology. These updates aim to strengthen the brand’s image and bring it closer to its traditional values.
A new design inspired by the past
Volkswagen plans to redefine the design language of its electric cars to better reflect the brand’s original DNA. The design will draw inspiration from the ID.2all concept, which harks back to iconic models like the Golf and Polo. These cars have always been appreciated for their simple yet appealing lines. The new look, developed by chief designer Andreas Mindt, will feature sharper shapes and a more dynamic design.
According to VW’s R&D head, Kai Grünitz, this approach aims to enhance customer connection to the brand. “We want to return to what Volkswagen has always been. Customers will see a change that is much bigger than expected,” Grünitz said.
Interior changes: physical buttons are back
In the interiors of the revamped ID.3 and ID.4, Volkswagen will focus on higher-quality materials and improved user-friendliness. One notable change will be the return of physical buttons, which customers have long been asking for. This decision, again inspired by the ID.2all concept, emphasizes practicality and ease of use.
Technological innovations and more efficient production
Volkswagen is also working on reducing the production costs of batteries and electric motors. These savings are expected to reflect not only in the car prices but also in better craftsmanship. “We’ll see significant improvements, both in terms of costs for us and benefits for our customers,” Grünitz emphasized.
Additionally, the MEB platform, which underpins Volkswagen’s current electric vehicles, will receive updates. While core technical features like rear-wheel drive will remain, new elements will enhance driving dynamics and overall comfort.
New models on the horizon
The year 2025 will mark a key milestone with the unveiling of the production version of the ID.2all and its SUV variant at the Munich Motor Show. These vehicles will be the first representatives of Volkswagen’s new era. A sporty ID.2 GTI version is also expected, bringing the DNA of popular sporty models into the electric realm.
Grünitz also confirmed that Volkswagen is collaborating with the American company Rivian on developing the future SSP platform. This platform is designed to support electric cars across all categories—from city cars to supercars—offering improved multimedia and software capabilities.

With the modernization of the ID.3 and ID.4 models, Volkswagen is demonstrating its willingness to listen to its customers and return to its roots. Featuring a fresh design, improved interiors, and advanced technologies, the brand aims to re-establish itself as a “loved brand,” as VW CEO Thomas Schäfer puts it. This transformation could not only lead to greater customer satisfaction but also strengthen Volkswagen’s position in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market, where it currently faces tough competition from Tesla and Chinese manufacturers.
