Mercedes-Benz is preparing for a new era, and a key model symbolizing this change is the new generation of the CLA. This stylish sedan was recently unveiled at the d’Hyères fashion festival, where it appeared in a camouflaged version. Despite being covered, the automaker revealed many details that hint at the future direction of the CLA in the coming years.
In terms of design, the CLA retains its signature “four-door coupe” look, with elegant lines and frameless windows that give the car a sporty appearance. Some new features are noticeable, such as prominent rear lights inspired by the E-Class and retractable door handles similar to those on the electric SUV EQS. The new CLA combines modern technology with classic style.
However, the most significant update is on the technical side. The CLA will be built on the MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform, which allows for various types of powertrains, including a fully electric version, hybrids, and even a traditional combustion engine. This shift reflects Mercedes’ response to criticism that it has focused too heavily on electric vehicles, while customers and the market are not yet ready for a complete transition to fully electric cars.
The MMA platform was originally intended only for electric models, but its flexibility allows Mercedes to offer a wider range of powertrains. This move is a response to customer demand, as many still prefer combustion engines or hybrid technology. While Mercedes initially aimed to focus solely on electric mobility and transition to fully electric vehicles by 2030, it is now reevaluating this strategy, giving customers more options. The new CLA, initially planned as a fully electric model, will also be available with hybrid and combustion engines.
This strategic shift is evident in recent sales figures. While sales of electric vehicles have dropped by 31%, hybrid models and cars with combustion engines are gaining popularity. Mercedes-Benz is betting that offering a broader range of powertrains will satisfy more customers and help stabilize sales. From July to September of this year, the automaker sold over 500,000 cars, demonstrating that interest in the brand remains strong, despite the decline in electric vehicle sales.
As for the CLA itself, the electric version promises a range of up to 750 kilometers on a single charge, thanks to an advanced 800V architecture that enables fast charging. According to initial information, the car should be able to recharge enough energy for another 400 kilometers in just 15 minutes. The exact market launch date for the new CLA is unclear, but it is speculated to be around the end of 2025 or early 2026.
With the new CLA, Mercedes-Benz shows that while electric mobility remains a crucial part of its future, the automaker is also responding to market realities and customer preferences. By offering a wider range of powertrains, Mercedes aims to meet diverse demands and ensure it maintains its strong position in the automotive market.
