Recaro: The Italian Rescue of a Legendary German Brand
The renowned brand of sports seats, Recaro, has faced tough times in recent months. After more than a century of innovation and quality, the company’s European division filed for bankruptcy, threatening not only its employees but also its reputation as a leader in the automotive accessories market. While the company’s future seemed uncertain, the Italian Proma Group stepped in with an offer that not only saves the brand but also directs it towards a new era. Bankruptcy of the European Division
In July 2024, Recaro Automotive GmbH declared insolvency. The company’s German headquarters in Kirchheim unter Teck had been struggling for some time. Layoffs and downsizing affected a total of 415 employees, most of whom have already lost their jobs. However, the bankruptcy impacted only the European division focused on car seats. Recaro’s operations in the United States, Japan, and China continued unaffected, as did divisions producing seats for airplanes, trains, and the gaming industry.
The downfall of Recaro’s European branch reflects broader challenges facing many companies on the continent. Overregulated business environments, rising costs, and increasingly demanding production requirements demonstrate how difficult it is to keep manufacturing in Europe competitive today.
A New Chapter Under Italian Leadership
The Italian Proma Group, a major supplier to the automotive industry, decided to step in and save Recaro. With over 3,300 employees across three continents, Proma is investing significant resources into the brand. Production will move to Italy, while the German headquarters will be downsized to a small team focusing on development and business operations.
Although moving production means job losses in Germany, it also creates an opportunity for modernization and process optimization. “Our investment in Recaro will strengthen our ability to deliver premium seats and bring innovation to the automotive industry,” said Proma Group’s CEO, Luca Pino.
Returning to the Market in 2025
Proma’s plan is straightforward: to revive the production of Recaro’s legendary seats and reintroduce them to the market with renewed energy. The first products from Italian factories are expected to be available as early as January 2025. These seats will continue to bear the hallmarks of quality and innovation that have defined the brand, though the shift from German to Italian manufacturing will undoubtedly feel like a symbolic loss to loyal fans.
Synergy Between German Engineering and Italian Manufacturing
The combination of German expertise and Italian production efficiency could be the key to Recaro’s success. Proma aims not only to maintain the brand’s high standards of quality but also to expand its portfolio of automotive accessories. The challenge remains adapting the brand to new global market conditions, where competition is constantly increasing.
