Toshihiro Suzuki, president of Suzuki Motor Corporation, recently made a clear statement about the future of the popular Jimny model. He confirmed that the brand has no plans to produce a hybrid or electric version of this iconic vehicle. The reason? It’s simple: electrification could “destroy the best part of the Jimny.” While the market is abuzz with new technology and sustainable drives, the Jimny retains its authentic essence.
One of the key factors behind the Jimny’s popularity is its classic build and rugged design, which resist modern trends. This compact off-roader has been around since 1970, and its fourth generation, launched in 2018, quickly won the hearts of car enthusiasts. However, due to strict emission regulations in Europe that limit the sale of non-electrified vehicles, Suzuki had to homologate the Jimny as an N1 commercial vehicle to bring it back to the European market—although with a slight compromise in its two-seater layout.
What makes the Jimny so popular?
Since its debut in 1970, the Suzuki Jimny has earned cult status. Its unique design, compact size, and sturdy build appeal to customers worldwide. The fourth generation, introduced in 2018, carried on its legacy with an improved ladder frame and solid axles, making it a true off-road “warrior.” Beyond its excellent off-road capabilities, the Jimny symbolizes freedom and adventure for many owners. It’s not just a car; it’s a lifestyle.
The Jimny’s charm lies in its simplicity and honest character. It’s not overly luxurious or packed with tech, which gives it an authenticity lacking in many modern SUVs. Yet it’s surprisingly practical—it performs just as well in city traffic, thanks to its compact size, as it does in challenging off-road conditions, where its lightweight frame and great handling shine. This unique combination makes it a standout vehicle.
Farewell edition “Mata”: Jimny in a special package
Unfortunately, the Jimny’s time on the European market is drawing to a close due to increasingly stringent emissions regulations. To commemorate this, a special limited edition named “Mata” (Japanese for “see you again”) has been created in Italy. This farewell series is based on the standard Jimny model but offers a few exclusive details: a two-tone body with metallic silver contrasting against a matte black hood, roof, and A-pillars, giving the model a distinctive retro look.
Additional special features include stylish stickers with the Japanese symbol 又 (Mata) and a subtly modified grille and bumpers that nod to the model’s heritage. Under the hood, it retains the traditional naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 75 kW (102 hp). Despite its modest power, the engine handles terrain well thanks to the Jimny’s lightweight construction and off-road gearing. Only 150 units of this edition will be available, enhancing its exclusivity. Sales begin on November 30, when the price will also be announced.
The Jimny Mata will serve as a memento of this iconic off-roader, which made a name for itself on European roads with its authenticity. While its future in Europe remains uncertain, fans are hopeful that this off-road “warrior” will make a comeback someday
